"Do I need a counsellor or a psychotherapist?" It's one of the questions people ask before they reach out, often with some worry that choosing the wrong one will waste their time. Here is how I see it.
What they have in common
Counselling and psychotherapy are both confidential, supportive conversations with a trained professional. Both work with the same kinds of themes:
- stress, anxiety and fear
- relationships and communication
- loss and difficult life changes
- boundaries and self-worth
- patterns that keep repeating, including those rooted in early experiences
In both, the relationship with the person you work with is at the centre. Research on helping conversations has shown for a long time that trust and feeling understood are among the most important parts of what helps.
Where they tend to differ
The line isn't the same everywhere, and it's often less sharp than it sounds. Some differences you may notice:
- Training. Psychotherapists usually complete a long, multi-year training in a specific approach. Counsellors are also trained, often in a shorter or more focused way.
- Regulation. In many countries psychotherapy is a regulated profession with its own rules. The details differ from country to country.
- Length and focus. Counselling is often more focused on a current situation and on finding your footing. Psychotherapy often runs longer. In practice, both can go deep.
What matters more than the name
When you choose support, ask yourself:
- Do I feel safe and respected with this person?
- Do they explain how they work, and is it clear what to expect?
- Is the pace right for me?
- Are they honest about what they do and don't offer?
A good professional in either field will tell you openly if what you need is outside their scope.
When you need a doctor
Some situations need medical care: when a diagnosis or medication may be needed, when symptoms are severe, or when there's a crisis. In those cases a doctor or psychiatrist is part of the picture, and counselling or psychotherapy can continue alongside.
If you are ever in crisis or have thoughts of harming yourself, contact your local emergency services or a doctor right away.
How I work
I offer counselling and psychotherapy, online, in English and Croatian. We work with stress, anxiety, relationships, boundaries, loss and patterns that repeat, at your pace. If there's a need for clinical care, I'll say so openly and we'll work alongside your doctor or a licensed specialist.
If you're unsure where to start, a free first conversation of up to 15 minutes is a good place.
