Counselling or coaching?

An honest map of which kind of support fits where you are right now.

People often write to me with the same question: "I don't know if I need counselling or coaching." It's a fair question. Both are conversations, both are confidential, and both aim at change. The difference is where you're starting from.

Counselling: when something is weighing on you

Counselling is for the times when something hurts or keeps repeating. Stress that doesn't let up, anxiety, fear, loss, a relationship that drains you, old reactions that show up even when you don't want them to. We look at what is happening in you now and how it connects to what you've lived through. The pace is slower. First comes stability, then the way forward.

Questions that often point to counselling:

  • I keep ending up in the same situation and don't understand why.
  • I feel overwhelmed and can't think clearly.
  • Something happened and I can't get past it.

Coaching: when you're ready to move

Coaching is for the times when you're steady enough to look ahead. There is a goal, a decision or a change in front of you: a new job, your own business, a leadership role, more confidence in how you show up. We focus on where you want to go and on concrete steps. The pace is faster, and there is work between sessions.

Questions that often point to coaching:

  • I know roughly what I want, but I'm stuck on how to get there.
  • I have a big decision to make and want clarity.
  • I want to grow in my role and trust myself more.

A simple test

Ask yourself: am I trying to get my balance back, or am I ready to build something new? If it's balance, start with counselling. If it's building, coaching is probably the better fit.

The line isn't always sharp

Many people start with counselling and move to coaching once things settle. Others come for coaching and find that an old pattern keeps getting in the way, so we slow down and look at it first. Both are fine. What matters is that the work fits where you actually are, not where you think you should be.

What neither of them is

Counselling and coaching are supportive, developmental work. They don't replace psychiatric or medical treatment. If there is a need for clinical care, I'll say so openly and help you find a licensed specialist, or we'll work alongside them.

Not sure? Let's check together

You don't have to decide alone. In a free first conversation of up to 15 minutes, you tell me briefly what's going on, and together we see which kind of support fits. Sessions are online, in English or Croatian.
