I've worked with NLP for years, and today I train NLP practitioners. That's exactly why I want to write about it honestly. NLP has a reputation problem, and part of it is earned.
What NLP is
NLP, neuro-linguistic programming, was developed in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. They studied how skilled communicators and therapists worked and turned what they observed into models and techniques. At its core, NLP is a practical toolkit: how we take in experience, how we talk to ourselves and to others, and how we can change reactions that no longer serve us.
What you can realistically expect
In my experience, a good NLP training gives you:
- clearer communication - you listen better and notice more than words
- ways to work with your own states, for example calming yourself before a difficult conversation
- a structured way to set goals you can actually reach
- more flexibility in seeing a situation from several sides
These are skills. Like any skill, they grow with practice, not in one weekend.
What NLP won't do
Some promises made about NLP don't hold up, and it's better to know that in advance.
- It isn't a way to control or manipulate people. Anyone selling it like that is selling something else.
- It isn't a quick fix for deep trauma, and it doesn't replace psychotherapy or medical treatment. NLP psychotherapy (NLPt) is a separate, much longer professional training.
- Research hasn't confirmed some of NLP's early claims, for example that you can reliably tell how someone is thinking from their eye movements. A good trainer will tell you that openly.
- A certificate alone doesn't make you a coach. It's a foundation, not a finish line.
How to choose a training or a specialist
Before you sign up, ask:
- Who accredits the training? Look for an international association such as IN (International Association of NLP Institutes) or EANLP.
- How many hours does it have, and how much of that is live practice?
- Does the trainer have experience outside the classroom, with real clients and real teams?
- Does the trainer talk openly about NLP's limits?
If the answers are vague, keep looking.
